Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using JavaScript, so your files stay on your device. You can confirm this by opening your browser devtools Network tab while working — there are no upload requests.

Is this different from just viewing a photo in black and white?

Yes. A filter your photo app applies for viewing is not saved into the file — open it anywhere else and the colour is still there. This tool re-encodes the pixels themselves, so the grayscale travels with the file wherever it goes.

Does this reduce file size?

A little, usually, since a grayscale JPG has less information to encode than a colour one at the same quality. It is a side effect, not the point — use Compress Image if file size is what you actually need to reduce.

Can I undo this later?

No — converting to grayscale discards the colour data permanently, the same as it would in any editor. Keep your original file if you might want the colour version again.

Is there a limit on how many files?

Thirty at a time, which is a limit of your device rather than our policy — everything is held in memory while it works.

What about transparency in a PNG?

Kept exactly. Only colour is removed; the alpha channel is untouched.
