Contrast stretches or compresses the gap between an image's darkest and lightest pixels. Increasing it makes shadows deeper and highlights brighter — good for a photo that looks washed out. Decreasing it pulls everything toward the middle, which softens an image that looks overly harsh or high-contrast.

How to adjust contrast

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The adjustment runs in your browser using JavaScript, so your files stay on your device. You can confirm this by opening your browser devtools Network tab while working — there are no upload requests.

What's the difference between contrast and brightness?

Brightness shifts every pixel by the same amount in the same direction. Contrast stretches the range between the darkest and lightest pixels apart (or squeezes it together), which changes shadows and highlights differently from the midtones. They solve different problems and often get used together.

Why do shadows turn solid black at a high setting?

Because increasing contrast pushes already-dark pixels further toward black and already-light pixels further toward white. Past a certain point, that clips detail at both ends rather than merely spreading it out — the same trade-off any editor makes.

What's a good starting amount?

Around 15–25 for a noticeable but natural-looking change. Higher settings start to look processed rather than corrected.

Is there a limit on how many files?

Thirty at a time, which is a limit of your device rather than our policy — everything is held in memory while it works.

Can I adjust brightness too?

Yes — Adjust Brightness is the separate control for that, and you can run both on the same image.
