Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The rotation is applied in your browser using JavaScript, so the file stays on your device. You can confirm this by opening your browser devtools Network tab while rotating — there are no upload requests.
Does rotating reduce the quality?
No, and it cannot. A PDF stores the orientation of each page as a separate instruction rather than baking it into the content, so rotating changes that one number and leaves everything else byte for byte identical. Nothing is re-encoded, no image is resampled, and the file size barely moves. This is the rare edit that costs you nothing.
I rotated the file in my PDF viewer and it went back. Why?
Most viewers rotate only what is on your screen, as a convenience for reading. Unless you explicitly save the file afterwards — and some viewers will not let you — the file itself is untouched, so the next person to open it sees the original orientation. Rotating here writes the change into the file.
Will the rotation still apply when I print or email it?
Yes. The orientation is part of the document, so it travels with the file. Anyone you send it to sees the pages the way you left them, and printing follows the same setting.
Can I rotate only the pages that came out sideways?
Yes. Switch "Which pages" to a range and list them — for example 2, 5-8. Spaces are ignored, order does not matter, and a page listed twice is only turned once. This is the usual case with a scanner that fed some sheets the wrong way round.
My page still looks sideways after rotating. What happened?
Two different things can make a page look wrong, and only one of them is rotation. The first is the page orientation setting, which is what this tool changes. The second is content that was drawn sideways inside an upright page — common with badly made scans, where the page claims to be portrait but the writing runs across it. In that case the page and its content disagree, and another quarter turn will line them up.
Does rotating change the page size?
The stored page box stays exactly as it was; what changes is how a viewer is told to present it. A portrait A4 page turned a quarter turn displays and prints as landscape A4, which is what you want, and turning it back restores the original view precisely. Nothing is cropped or stretched at any point.
Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. A PDF with an open password has to be unlocked first, using a password you know. Once unlocked, it rotates like any other file.
