Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Metadata is read in your browser using JavaScript, so your file stays on your device. You can confirm this by opening your browser devtools Network tab while working — there are no upload requests.

What fields does it show?

Title, author, subject, keywords, the creating application, the PDF producer (often the library or printer driver that generated the file), the creation date, and the last-modified date — whichever of those the file actually has set. It also flags whether the file carries a separate embedded XMP metadata block, which some publishing tools write in addition to these fields.

It says no metadata was found — is that normal?

Yes. Not every PDF sets these fields, and some tools that generate PDFs deliberately leave them blank. An empty result here means the file genuinely has nothing set, not that the tool failed to read it.

Why does the author field show a name I don't recognise?

Because it usually reflects whoever's computer or account created the file originally — the document's own author, a company template's default, or whoever exported it from another format — not necessarily who is distributing it now. It travels with the file rather than updating on its own.

Can I remove this information instead of just viewing it?
