Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Conversion runs in your browser using JavaScript, so your files stay on your device. You can confirm this by opening your browser devtools Network tab while converting — there are no upload requests.

Will every browser show a WebP image?

Yes, for anything made in the last several years — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari have all supported it since 2020 or earlier. The exceptions are old desktop software and some image editors, which is the one case to keep JPG or PNG around for.

How much smaller will the file be?

For a photograph, typically 25–35% smaller than the equivalent JPG at matching quality. Converting from PNG can save much more — 70–80% is common — because PNG was storing every pixel exactly and WebP does not have to.

What happens to transparency?

WebP keeps it, from either a transparent PNG or a GIF. This is one of the two places (the other being general Convert Image) where you can get a transparent image out smaller than the PNG you started with.

Does converting lose quality?

A small, invisible-at-default-settings amount, the same as any JPG save — WebP is a lossy format at normal quality settings. What is worth avoiding is repeated round trips through different formats, which lose a little more each time.

Is there a limit on how many files?

Thirty at a time, which is a limit of your device rather than our policy — everything is held in memory while it works.
