How do I skip numbering the cover page?
Switch "Which pages" to a range starting from page 2 — for example 2-20 on a 20-page file. Combine that with a starting number of 1 and the cover stays blank while the first content page reads "1".
What does "of N" count in "Page 1 of 10"?
The number of pages actually being numbered, not the page count of the whole file. If you number 9 of a 10-page document because the cover is excluded, the footer reads up to "9 of 9" — the total always matches what you can count by turning the numbered pages, since "of 10" would be confusing on a document where only 9 pages carry a number.
Can I start counting from a number other than 1?
Yes — set a starting number and the whole sequence shifts from there. This is the usual case when a document is one part of a larger set with continuous numbering, like a chapter that continues from the page count of the one before it.
Can the page numbers be removed afterward?
They are drawn as real page content, not a separate layer — the same way most "add page numbers" tools and print-to-PDF flows work. Removing them again needs a PDF editor capable of erasing page content directly.
Can I add page numbers to a password-protected PDF?
