Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. EXIF is read in your browser using JavaScript, so your files stay on your device — which matters especially here, since the whole point is finding out what a photo reveals before you send it anywhere else.

Why does this only work on JPG?

JPEG is where cameras and phones actually write EXIF, in a well-defined block near the start of the file. PNG and WebP can technically carry it too, but it is rare in practice and stored differently in each, so this tool stays scoped to the format that matters.

What fields does it show?

Camera make and model, lens, the date the photo was taken, exposure time, aperture, ISO, focal length, and GPS coordinates if the photo was tagged with a location — whichever of those the file actually has. Not every camera or app writes every field.

It says "no EXIF data found" — is that expected?

Yes, this is common. Many messaging apps, social platforms, and some editors strip EXIF automatically before a photo is shared or saved, so a photo that has already passed through one of those will genuinely have none left to show.

Can I remove this data instead of just viewing it?

Yes — Remove Image Metadata strips everything this tool shows, and anything else the file carries besides.

Is there a limit on how many files?

Thirty at a time, which is a limit of your device rather than our policy — everything is held in memory while it works.
